Barbörukórinn

Barbörukórinn

Barbörukórinn is a chamber choir founded in the spring of 2007 by Guðmundur Sigurðsson, then organist of Hafnarfjörður Church, together with a group of singers. The choir is named after Saint Barbara, whose statue was discovered during an excavation in Kapelluhraun in 1950.

The choir regularly performs at services in Hafnarfjörður Church, as well as giving concerts and singing at funerals throughout the capital area. Barbörukórinn is known for its pure, refined singing and professional presentation, with a particular focus on Iceland’s musical heritage.

The choir has released two CDs: Syngið Drottni nýjan söng (Sing to the Lord a New Song, 2012) and Barbara mær (Barbara the Virgin, 2023), the latter featuring a cappella choral works by Icelandic composers. In the autumn of 2023, the choir participated in a choral festival in Tolosa, Spain, performing four concerts in packed churches and receiving unanimous praise from audiences.
